On Friday night Marci and I went to a superb production of Handel’s Messiah at the Winspear Centre here in Edmonton. I’ve seen the Messiah several times but this was probably the best performance I’ve ever witnessed. It struck me as I was listening how Handel really scores a home run at the very beginning, with the tenor singing ‘Comfort Ye’ and ‘Every Valley Shall Be Exalted’ – two absolutely amazing pieces of music, and from then on the hits just keep on rolling until the ‘Messiah’ is finished two and a half hours later!
So here are those first two pieces. Sorry about the annoying bit of introduction to each video, but just wait a minute and you’ll get to the performance. And this tenor, like the one we heard Friday night, is really in top form!
