Some Tyrant

Here is young Maz O’Connor with a fine version of the old folk song ‘Some Tyrant’.

You can find out more about Maz by visiting her website here, where there are some disappointingly short 30 second tracks from her latest album! But of course you can also google her name and you’ll discover a few more YouTube videos.

Incidentally, the history of ‘Some Tyrant’ is interesting (I suspect Maz got it from Kate Rusby), and there are many different versions of this old song that apparently dates back to the seventeenth century. There is an interesting discussion about it at Mudcat Café here.

  1. Hello Tim,
I was delighted to find this clip of Maz O’Connor who really is quite a talent. People talk about her relaxed and understated delivery. It will be interesting to see how her career develops now she has turned professional. If memory serves me correctly the film was shot at Warwick Folk Festival, England, during 2010 when Maz was 19 years old. The guitarist, equally relaxed and understated it would seem, is Matthew Jones who has recently been on tour in America with the legendary Irish band McPeake and who played with them at the Proms in the Park, Belfast on September 8th. He was a BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Winner back in 2007 with the Folk band Last Orders, the connection being that Maz was invited to perform on their debut CD and the subsequent 2007 tour. She sang at Cambridge Folk Festival and Fairport Convention’s 40th Anniversary Cropredy Festival, the latter involving some 20,000 people. She was then just 16. Maz and Matthew will be touring England together from October, at times in support of the Demon Barbers’ Lock In dance extravaganza.

    Hope this is helpful

    Kind Regards

  2. Hello again Tim,

Just to let you know that Maz has been nominated for the prestigious 2013 BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award. The winner will be announced at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections Festival on January 30th. There are four acts in contention, all of whom are really talented, but as Maz has indicated on her blog (www.mazoconnor.com) she feels it is a real privilege merely to have been nominated.

    Regards

    Mike
