The Sheffield Apprentice

Martin Simpson is of course a superb guitarist and banjo player, and is equally at home in the worlds of English traditional and American blues music – indeed, he likes to draw on the connections between them, as this song demonstrates. This is the opening track from his recent album, ‘Purpose and Grace’; it’s called ‘The Sheffield Apprentice’.

There is more information about ‘The Sheffield Apprentice’ here, here and here, and it is also worth searching for it on YouTube as there are some other good versions of the song there too.

Martin Simpson’s website is here. Martin has two fine albums devoted almost entirely to British traditional folk music, ‘The Bramble Briar’ (2001) and ‘Kind Letters‘ (2005), and there are some excellent traditional songs on his more recent albums too. His most recent album is ‘Purpose and Grace’ (2011).
