Ruins by the Shore

Speaking of Nic Jones, here is one of his rare original songs. It was never recorded on a studio album, but appears in a live version on the 1988 compilation disc ‘In Search of Nic Jones’. Nic sang it as part of his recent gigs at Warwick and Cambridge Folk Festivals, accompanied by Belinda O’Hooley on piano.

In the liner notes to ‘In Search of Nic Jones’, Nic comments:

Somewhere in Brittany there is a ruin rising up above the shore where we spent a day during one of our camping holidays. As I watched Helen investigating hidden places among the stones trying to find spiders with which to scare the wits out of Joe, I was reminded of a scene in the film The Planet of the Apes, when Charlton Heston finds the torch of the Statue of Liberty sticking out of the sand. The thoughts and the image stuck.
