Billy Bragg sings Woody Guthrie

The story of the Mermaid Avenue project – which saw Billy Bragg and Wilco taking the unrecorded lyrics of Woody Guthrie, writing tunes for them and recording them – is told here.

Here’s a great video of one of those songs, played by Billy and his band on their recent North American tour. Enjoy!

  1. I have the album, Tim, and I enjoy very much listening to it.

    “Hoodoo voodoo, chooka, chooky choochoo,
True blue, how true, kissle me now.”

That one always makes me laugh. All the nonsense words come together in just the right way in Billy’s version.

  2. Tim Chesterton

It is a great line! I’m glad you’ve got the album – I haven’t got it myself, but it’s on my list after listening to some of the videos.

If John the Baptist ‘is’ Elijah, I sometimes wonder if Billy Bragg ‘is’ Woody Guthrie…

  3. There’s a fairly affordable boxed set of all three Mermaid Avenue albums that also features the documentary on the making of the first album — and maybe the second; I’ve not watched it for a while. Details are at Billy’s page (billybragg dot com).
