Martin Carthy: Seven Yellow Gypsies

This is an earlier recording, from the 1960s, of Martin with the very common traditional song ‘Seven Yellow Gypsies’. As I said last week, this song exists in many versions and goes by several different names: ‘Raggle-Taggle Gypsies’, ‘Gypsy Laddie’, ‘Black-Jack Davy’, to name just three. More information at ‘Mainly Norfolk‘, and this thread on ‘Mudcat Café‘ includes information about many other versions and performances of the song. Especially notable is Jon Boden’s fine a cappella recording on ‘A Folk Song a Day’ which you can listen to here.
