Random Lent Thought for March 3rd: Fasting

My random Lent thought for today:

Fasting is not a thing ‘in itself’, something we do just because it’s traditionally associated with Lent. Fasting has a purpose – two purposes, in fact. First, it’s about the removal of distraction. The purpose of Lent is to deepen our relationship with God. But we humans are easily distracted from something as intangible as a relationship with God. As Jesus put it in the parable of the sower, ‘the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desires for other things’ are like weeds that grow up and choke the fragile seed of the Word of God that is growing in us. So we fast – abstaining from something – in order to create an empty space in our lives that God can fill. This is why ‘fasting’ doesn’t just apply to food, but to any distraction (which is why so many of my friends are abstaining from Facebook for Lent!).

Maybe I’ll talk about the second purpose of fasting tomorrow…
